🌲 How people usually do Alaska orientation,
not a plan

Most trips out of Anchorage split between two zones, linked by two famous drives. This is just the lay of the land — use the ideas below to fill in what you actually want.

South · Kenai Peninsula

Water, glaciers, wildlife, fishing — Seward (Kenai Fjords), Whittier, Homer. Reached via the Seward Highway along Turnagain Arm.

North · the Interior

Denali, tundra wildlife, Talkeetna flightseeing. Reached via the Parks Highway. 2026: Denali road closed past Mile 43 — the big-mountain moment is a Talkeetna flightsee.

A week is usually a few nights south + a few north, looping back to Anchorage. Want more remote? Add the Glenn Highway (Matanuska Glacier) or far-east Wrangell–St. Elias. Vote, comment, and add your own — we'll shape a plan later.

Know before you book

  • Mid-July = peak. Seward, Talkeetna & Denali lodging sells out months ahead — reserve early.
  • Denali 2026: park road is closed past ~Mile 43 (Pretty Rocks slide) — big-mountain views come from a Talkeetna flightsee instead.
  • Daylight is endless — pack a sleep mask. Bring layers, rain shell, bug spray, and sun protection for glacier glare.
